Thermal transfer ribbons provide a simple, efficient, and relatively inexpensive means of applying labels to a wide variety of substrates, including, for example, glass, vinyl, wood, paper, metal, and plastic. The process for making the ribbon generally involves coating one or more release sheets or layers with a radiation-curable polymer and winding the resulting ribbon around a take-up core. The coating is then cured, leaving a thin layer of polymer on the release surface.
The process for applying a label involves placing the ribbon between the substrate and the desired label. The printed side of the ribbon is brought into contact with the substrate, and heat and pressure are applied to the ribbon. The label is transferred to the substrate. The substrate, ribbon, and label are then removed from the heating apparatus. Generally, the ribbon and label are not heated. Thus, the polymer coating on the label is not cured. The ribbon is then wound around a take-up core.
Thermal transfer ribbons are typically sold as roll-fed ribbon. When a roll of ribbon is run out, the ribbon is cut, then rewound into a new roll for the next use. However, cutting the ribbon when the roll is out of ribbon wastes ribbon, and the use of a ribbon cutter is very time consuming. Therefore, it is desirable to provide a ribbon that is capable of being wound into a new roll when the roll is out of ribbon.
To further increase efficiency, thermal transfer ribbons are typically wound into reels. The reel can then be unwound and cut when the ribbon is run out, reducing the amount of wasted ribbon.
